QUINCYGrowing up in Milton, John Garvey relished cooling off on a hot summer day by jumping into one of the Quincy quarries. Garvey, who now lives in Wellesley, never envisioned that the area would become the home of an award-winning golf course with breathtaking views of the Boston skyline and surrounding communities.

imgA recent online survey of Patriot Ledger readers ranked Granite Links Golf Club the top place for panoramic scenery worth checking out.

“It was woods, trails and rock,” Garvey, 48, said, as he prepared to tee off at Granite Links for a round of golf. “You couldn’t see the views. There were a lot of trees. Now, I can see my mother’s house on Courtland Circle in Milton from here.”

Garvey’s golfing partner, Paul Bergman, 62, of Charlestown, a Granite Links member, said there is nothing like watching your golf ball disappear into the horizon.

“The views are fantastic,” Bergman said. “On a clear day you feel you can almost touch the skyline.”

The views are also eye-catching from the club’s Tavern Restaurant, which is open to the public.

“As I look out the window from my office, I see people walking down the hill and stop to look at the view,” Walter Hannon III, the club’s general manager, said. “They will come to take pictures for first communions, bar mitzvahs and weddings, and they don’t even have a function here.”
