19th Hole

Enjoying A Round After Your Round

imgThe real charm of the 19th hole at a golf course, i.e. the bar, pub, grille room, lounge, veranda, patio or anyplace else you can enjoy a cold one and some grub, is that you don’t have to play the other 18 to enjoy it.

But to truly savor the 19th hole, playing the first 18 is paramount. It’s a fitting way to gather after spending time with friends, a perfect spot to tally up scores, pay off or collect bets, tell a few jokes, discuss the great and not-so-great shots of the day, and make plans for the next round (drinks or golf ).

Golfing Magazine will bring you some of the best 19th holes in New England. Here are three. Tell us your favorites by emailing at [email protected].

GRANITE LINKS GOLF CLUB, QUINCY, MA

I mean, how do you beat a view of the Boston skyline on a late afternoon spring, summer of autumn day or evening? That’s what The Tavern at Granite Links offers, plus the possibility of rubbing elbows with one of The Hub’s sports personalities, maybe Bill Russell, Luis Tiant or Ray Bourque, to name a few. On crystal clear nights you may hear the roar of the crowd and see the lights at Fenway Park

GREAT RIVER GOLF CLUB, MILFORD, CT

Monty’s River Grille at Great River is one of the most 19th holes impressive you’ll find in New England. The clubhouse is magnificent and it’s hard to beat enjoying a lager, glass of wine or single malt on the wrap-around veranda overlooking several holes and the practice area. Plus, the food here is very good, which makes the view all the more palatable, pun intended.

TOWER RIDGE Country Club, SIMSBURY, CT

Sitting on the patio at Tower Ridge is special for one very simple reason; the view of the 18th hole as it tumbles down from a hillside, across a pond and to the putting surface that sits only yards away from The Grille. You can watch the entire hole being played, and maybe even catch a glimpse of a hawk or two floating above the cliffs that serve as a stunning backdrop to this truly unique golf course.
