Golf Digest Names Granite Links "Best 19th"!

Golf Digest Votes Granite Links’ as Having One of
“The Best 19th Holes in America”

imgQuincy, MA – February 5, 2008 – Granite Links Golf Club received word today from Golf Digest Chairman and Editor in Chief, Jerry Tarde, that its public Tavern Restaurant and private Members Grille Dining Room have been named to a list of the 50 Best 19th Holes in the United States.

The term “Nineteenth Hole” refers to a clubhouse facility that welcomes players for a celebratory or conciliatory drink after playing an eighteen-hole round of golf.  It is considered by most to be an integral part of the golfing experience.  Golf Digest editors canvassed the country in search of the best places to unwind. They note that all the establishments were selected for their individual character.

“Golf is an arduous outdoor activity,” said Granite Links’ general manager, Walter Hannon, III with tongue slightly in cheek.  “It’s played on rough terrain in blazing heat, pouring rain and everything in between and often under conditions of high mental stress. We take pride in providing our players with a warm and friendly haven where they can comfortably re-hydrate after such exertion.”

Hannon said the club had no idea that Golf Digest was conducting this survey and was not made aware when the publication’s representatives sampled its facilities.

Granite Links’ Food and Beverage Director, Brian Leonard, said the judging anonymity gives even greater credence to the designation. “It’s a real validation for the wait staff, bar staff and kitchen crew that we were recognized for doing what we do on an everyday basis.”

Of the fifty golf clubs making the list, only one other was from Massachusetts –The Country Club, (a venerable and closed-to-the-public institution in Brookline, MA).  The complete list appears in the March issue of Golf Digest, (available at newsstands on Feb 12), and features brief descriptions of each of the winning facilities.  For Granite Links, it writes:

“Picture the TV show “Cheers” (only Cliff and Norm play golf): devoted Boston sports fans drink next to local sports legends Bill Russell, Luis Tiant and Ray Bourque; impressive view of the city; be prepared to defend any statement you make about golf, sports or life in general to a complete stranger.”
