Spring finally arrived to gear up the Granite Links Spring Team for another great year as they participated in the annual Match Play Tournaments, sponsored by the WGAM – Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts.   It’s an annual “Rite of Spring” golf tradition for many women golfers throughout the Commonwealth.  The Spring Teams Tournament starting in May of 1900, has been played by WGAM member clubs every spring for the past 108 years!

This year, 810 women from 162 club teams across Massachusetts, participated in the five week tournament competition.   Six teams are assigned to a “Cup” and compete against each other, in team match play rotation over a five week period.  Each week a different club will host the match play events at their home club.  Our Granite Links Golf Club was assigned to participate in Cup #19 along with five other WGAM clubs: Eastward Ho!,  Quashnet Valley Country Club, Braintree Municipal Golf Club, Needham Country Club and the Wianno Club.

Granite Links Golf Club had a strong team this year and high hopes to win Cup #19.  This year’s team members included: Jill Collinson, Alisha Nielsen, Agnes Rogan, Patrice Keegan, Lynn Carlmark, Christine Cunniff, Ruth Thomsen and team captain Gail Regan.

April 24th The Spring Team Matches season opener was held at Quashnet Valley Country Club on the Cape where the Granite Links team played a strong team from Eastward Ho!  The weather was perfect and our Granite Links Ladies were able to beat the team from Eastward Ho! by winning four out of the five individual matches.

May 1st found the team traveling to the Wianno Club, a beautiful old Donald Ross private course on the Cape to play the Wianno Club on their own home turf.  It was a tough day for our Granite Links team as they struggled and lost 4 of 5 matches to Wianno.

May 8th was a local trip to a surprisingly nice Braintree course.  The team won 3 out of 5 matches against Needham, but found themselves tied at the bottom of the Cup #19 point standings, with Eastward Ho!

May 15th After much soul searching in the 19th Hole Members Grille and some golf lessons from Mr. Sleeper, the team was well prepared to make their home stand at Granite Links on May 15th.    The team came out fired up to play, easily winning all 5 matches against Quashnet Valley and rocketed back up the leader board into 3rd place overall, one point out of second place.

May 22nd With hopes high for a final push to take the Cup from Wianno, the team traveled to Eastward Ho!, a beautiful, historic and very scenic Cape course in Chatham.  Unfortunately, the Granite Links gals met their match against a strong Braintree team and lost 4 of 5 matches, finishing the season in 4th place overall.

  1. Wianno Club                  242.5 points
  2. Quashnet Valley             230.5 points
  3. Braintree                              226.5 points
  4. Granite Links               217.5 points
  5. Needham                       217 points
  6. Eastward Ho!                 216.0 points

Although our 2008 - Quest for the Cup has come to an end, it doesn’t end all the team fun, as there are many more WGAM tournaments and Club invitational’s still to play this 2008 golf season.  So, if you’re interested in joining the Granite Links Spring Team for next year’s Quest for the Cup - 2009, or are interested in joining the WGAM and playing tournament golf this 2008 season, open to women (30.4 handicap or less), please contact our WGAM Club Chairwoman and Spring Team Captain, Gail Regan, via Granite Links' Membership Director.
